Doctors On Your Terms …Seriously

November 19, 2015 by Alison 20 Comments

Thank  you to AmWell for sponsoring this post and for introducing me to this life changing service. All opinions are based on my experience with the service and 100% my own.

One of the kiddos is sick, or maybe it’s mom. I’m not sure which one is worse, but I am certain that neither of them is convenient. I live in a rural area so to add to the inconvenience, I tack on an extra 30-45 minutes one way just to get to town to go see the doctor. Sadly that’s also that much more time in the car that could possibly result in a pukey mess depending on the situation. Not good, and let’s be honest here; when you’re sick or your kiddos are, getting everyone bundled up and on the road is the last thing you want to do. You want to sit around in PJ’s with a blankey and a 7-up and just be sick. Fortunately we live in a technology oriented society so now, you can do just that…see a legitimate medical professional without ever leaving the couch.

Seriously! I checked it out myself. It’s called AmWell and it’s one of my new very favorite things. I haven’t been feeling myself lately and while it’s nothing that I felt to be an emergency, I was interested in talking to someone to see if I should be concerned. Turns out there are some things I can do at home and if that doesn’t work, just another quick chat on my schedule with my doc, and we can try a prescription remedy. Through the website you are able to view providers, their profile and credentials, and see whether they’re on or offline, you know in case you have a favorite doc that you want to see. It also keeps a record of the providers you’ve seen and who, if anyone is currentlly treating you.You have the option of  Primary Care for regular medical issues, a nutritionist,  or even those who specialize in psychology.

It should be no surprise, but there’s an app for that also! You can literally have access to medical professionals anywhere you happen to be! Sick kids on a camping trip? No problem. For me, this could be life changing because scheduling and then dragging sick kids (or sick moms) out to the doctors office is quite the event. Being able to get some answers right now, even if it’s 10 o’clock at night insteading of waiting until they can squeeze you in at the clinic, almost an hour away the next afternoon, well that’s huge! Plus, you won’t find yourself relying on Dr. Google and end up thinking the sore throat you have is now terminal.

One of my favorite features of the AmWell site is the Health Reference feature. Say you aren’t necessarily ready for a live visit, but you have some questions, you’d want to head over to the Health Reference center. It provides a symptom checker, details about specific ailments, and even some home treatment suggestions. The best part, the cost to see a regular primary care physician on AmWell is $49.00 which is way less than a regular office visit at any clinic I’ve ever been to and the do take insurnance just like a traditional medical practice so if you’re coverage is with a participating provider, it may not even be that much! Winning!

A lot of people put off doctor visits because of the inconvenience. This puts a stop to that kind of procrastination!

This sounds like a great service. I would definitely use it if I couldn’t get out of the house to see a real doctor for some reason.

it’s really hard to have a sickness and then the doctor that would look on you is not accommodating.
