Three Things Every Self Respecting Adult Needs

Do you ever feel like you’re not quite an adult yet? I frequently find myself asking for an adultier adult… This seems to be a fairly common sentiment among a lot of people, regardless of their age. The world is a massive, complicated place and a lot about being an adult is wrapped up in finding your place in it. Of course, that’s something that’s far easier said than done. In fact, there are those who would say that finding your place in the world isn’t the point at all. Whatever you feel, it can be difficult to see yourself as a fully functioning adult, especially when it feels as though everyone else seems to know what they’re doing. But when it comes down to it, there’s really only one way to feel like an adult, and that’s to act like one. Some might say “fake it til you make it” but really it’s just a matter of being able to take control of your life. With that in mind, here are three skills that every single self-respecting adult should have.

Cooking

Nothing makes you feel like less of an adult than having toast for dinner for the third night in a row. Most of us spend a few years when we first live on our own eating junk and surviving on packets of noodles. But eventually, the time comes where you’ve actually got to start thinking about what you’re putting in your body. This doesn’t mean you suddenly need to become a five-star chef. Just find a few simple meals and learn how to cook them really well. A good guide to follow is that you should be able to cook at least one super quick meal, at least a couple of vegetarian meals, and at least one showstopper. That way, no matter what situation you find yourself in, you’re always ready to whip on your apron and hop into the kitchen.

First aid

Have you ever been in an emergency situation and had absolutely no idea what to do? Do your remember how powerless and useless you felt? This is something that almost everyone has experienced in their lives, and it’s a truly awful feeling. To avoid that happening, every adult should take at least one first aid course. Learning how to perform CPR and use a public access defibrillator are crucial skills that really aren’t that difficult to learn. Not only will you know what to do next time there’s an emergency but you could end up saving someone’s life. It’s also a good idea to make sure that you’re always prepared for the worst. Check out this post on theravingtrends to give yourself an idea of the kinds of preparations you might want to make in the event of disaster. As the boy scouts say: be prepared!

Managing finances

Living hand to mouth is fine when you’re a student, but once you reach the adult world, it’s time to start getting smarter with your money. Learning the basics of managing your finances is a great way to feel more in control of your life. Learn to set up a basic budget and start putting money aside in a savings account in case of emergencies. There are plenty of places online that you can find guides and templates to help you do this so that you’re not left wondering where all of your money went at the end of each month.

The reality of adult life is that the one thing you simply can’t do is to hide your head in the sand. As scary as things can often be, if you want to live your best possible life, you have to be willing to put the effort in.
