Ways to Keep Your Kids Engaged During the Holidays

July 20, 2020 by Alison Leave a Comment

Of course, holidays are a good time for the kids to unwind and leave behind tedious school activities. Once the excitement of the first couple of days wears off, it’s a whole stretch of boredom. Right off the top of your head, it may be a bit hard to think of activities to occupy them with. Believe us when we say that, there is nothing scarier than a bored child. Keeping them active is a major way to provide a supportive home life for your kids. So, rather than bringing up weak ideas that could potentially make the holiday a gruesome one, simply check out the options below.

Ways to Keep Your Kids Engaged During the Holidays

Have a Treasure Hunt

Kids love treasure hunts, scratch that, everybody loves treasure hunts. It’s a great way to amp up the excitement and spread a whole lot of fun. This is one backyard activity that can keep your little one occupied for hours at a stretch. Simply draw out a treasure map packed with clues as to where certain items are hidden in your yard. It does not have to be anything extravagant, the actual fun is in the search.

Give them Books to Read

This probably sounds like school after school, but it’s good to keep their minds active. There is a wide range of educational books for teens, tweens and younger kids out there. You can get them hooked on these to expand their horizons. Even more, you can expose them to other great reads that come in the form of prose, plays and poetry. A whopping third of teenagers do not read for pleasure anymore, so it’s important to catch them while they are young. TV may be a good distraction, but books offer a whole lot more.

Paint

You don’t have to be Da Vinci or Van Gogh to enjoy a good day indulging in some painting. It a great way for the kids to exert some energy, both physical and mental. For this activity, simply arm yourself with lots of paper and paint and let them go wild. It’s probably wise to do this outdoors because it’s bound to get a bit messy. Nevertheless, it will go a long way to keep the fun alive.

Gardening

This may seem like a chore, but you can actually turn it into a fun activity for your kids. Who knows, this may be a gateway to getting them to grow their own fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Start with some empty pots and some soil, then teach them the basics. You’ll be pleased with how engaged they will get; gardening is actually lots of fun. The added advantage here is the fact that your kids get to learn some responsibility.

Let Them Chill

It’s the holidays, so you definitely have to give them time to breathe. They’ve been going along with a structured routine for a while so let them chill for a bit. If they want to lay around and do nothing, let them. If they want to watch movies for a bit, let them do that too.
