5 Signs You May Need to See an Audiologist

March 3, 2021 by Alison Leave a Comment

An audiologist can diagnose and treat a number of conditions relating to the inner ear, as well as hearing loss. These can affect anyone from children to the elderly. For this reason, it’s worth staying on top of hearing screenings and tests at all ages. It’s important to look out for any signs and symptoms in order to maintain healthy hearing and communication. If you think you, your child, or perhaps an elderly relative may need to see an audiologist, here are five common signs to look out for.

Difficulty following conversations

If you or a loved one seems to have difficulty following conversations then this could be a sign of hearing loss. Hearing loss can be temporary and there are a number of possible causes such as infections, ear wax build-up, loud noises, or underlying conditions. Your hearing is important for your social life in order to maintain mental wellbeing. It’s advisable to visit an audiologist if you feel your hearing is getting in the way of social interactions.

Turning up the volume

Perhaps you’re constantly having to turn up the volume on your TV or other devices. If you’re finding it more difficult to hear your favorite shows than before, this could be a sign you need to see an audiologist. If a relative is experiencing these issues then try to encourage them to make an appointment for a hearing test. This can often be an awkward conversation, and you can learn more here about how to approach the issue.

A ringing in the ears

A ringing in the ear could be caused by a number of external factors but it’s also a sign of tinnitus. This is a condition commonly treated by audiologists. If you’re experiencing a ringing in your ears, book an appointment to get to the root of the problem. An audiologist will be able to recommend the most suitable solution for you.

Frequent ear infections

Ear infections are common in both children and adults, but if you or a family member is experiencing them frequently you should see your doctor. They may refer you to an audiologist depending on the initial diagnosis. There are different causes that could be anything from a build-up of wax to allergies and colds. Ear infections left untreated can lead to other issues. Here is a quick guide to ear infections for more information. Treatments can vary from antibiotics to ear syringing.

Vertigo or balance issues

An audiologist is also qualified to diagnose and treat balance problems. These are commonly related to the inner ear. If you or someone you know is experiencing vertigo or balance issues, book an appointment with an audiologist. They will be able to identify the cause of the problem and provide the right treatment. If you or a loved one has a hearing or balance-related issue, the best thing to do is see an audiologist to put your mind at ease. This way you’ll be able to understand symptoms and discuss any necessary treatment.
