7 Hair Health Hacks That Will Blow Your Mind!

March 26, 2021 by Alison Leave a Comment

Your hair is one of the most noticeable features you possess! When people see you, their attention is almost always drawn to your lovely locks. As such, you should do everything you can to keep your hair as healthy as possible. This means it will be radiant, thick, and extremely pleasing to look at! Some hair health tips are straightforward, while others are a little bit wacky and seem farfetched. Needless to say, you should consider the whole spectrum of hair health hacks to ensure you keep your locks are lovely as can be.

Lucky for you, you’re in the right place. Today, you can read through this guide detailing a few of the best hair health hacks out there. You don’t have to add them all to your routine, but sprinkling a few of them in here and there will definitely improve your hair situation!

Use mayonnaise as a conditioner

We may as well start off with one of the weirdest hacks out there! Mayonnaise is a popular condiment to have with all sorts of different foods. However, did you know that it is also really good for your hair? Mayonnaise hair masks are a thing, and you can see a video below that shows you how to make one.

Why is this a popular hack, and how does it make your hair healthy? Well, mayonnaise is full of healthy fats and oils that can replenish dry hair. It’s a great option if your hair lacks sebum production, leading to a dry scalp. Plus, the inclusion of eggs in mayonnaise means you have a little bit of a protein boost there as well. This could actually make your hair stronger, and there are some suggestions that mayonnaise contains an amino acid that might contribute to hair growth!

Obviously, make sure you use a normal jar of mayonnaise for your mask, not one that includes loads of additional flavorings. Also, and this should go without saying, ensure the mayonnaise is clean and nobody has dipped anything in the jar before you use it!

Improve your diet

Speaking of mayonnaise and food, your diet can have a direct impact on your hair. In fact, changing your diet to improve hair health is often a phenomenal long-term solution. Most of the hair hacks you see are designed around applying things to your hair. In essence, they work from outside to in. You put stuff on your hair, and it should seep into the roots and your scalp.

By changing your diet, you elicit positive changes from inside to out! The main thing to consider is that you eat more healthy fats. Fish is perhaps the best source of healthy fats, purely because it also contains protein. Your hair is made up of a type of protein, so you need plenty of it to keep it healthy. A good diet works wonders for your body, leading to changes in things like oil production, hair strength, and much more.

Cut your hair short

Yes, believe it or not, but this is a hack for keeping your hair healthy. Did you know that shorter hair is healthier than long hair? It’s true, and this is because the hair is closer to the roots. Therefore, it tends to be a lot stronger, leading to thicker hair. You can kind of see this in action when you compare hair loss in people with short and long hair. If your hair is very long, you will have so many loose strands falling out all the time. This is simply because the hair is so long it loses its strength!

Many people are worried about cutting their hair as they think short hairstyles aren’t that great. There’s always been a notion that short hair is linked to boys, which puts some women off. Obviously, this is stupid! There are loads of gorgeous hairstyles out there for people with short hair. In fact, take a look at this article called 28 very short haircuts and hairstyles, and you’ll see so many amazing options. Thus, you can rock some short hair and keep your hair healthier!

Of course, you don’t technically need to have short hair for it to be healthy! However, if you have long hair and feel like it’s thinning or getting weak, this can be a great change. It’s almost like resetting your hair and building its health back up.

Don’t wash your hair every day

This is my favorite hair health hack as you don’t have to do anything! Washing your hair every day is not good for you. Yes, that sounds bizarre, but it’s true. If you wash your hair too often, you can remove natural oils and dry out your scalp. It’s a bit like a plant not getting enough nutrients from the soil because it’s being flooded with water. The result will be dull and dry hair that looks incredibly unhealthy.

Instead, you should aim to wash your hair maybe twice a week. This seems shocking to a lot of you, but it’s seen as the best frequency to allow your hair to naturally secrete its oils. Now, you will probably see some less than desirable results when you first try this. Your hair may seem dirty and excessively oily, but this is a natural reaction. It’s used to being washed daily, so it has to take some time to adapt and react. Eventually, it will reach a point where your hair secretes its natural oils at a better schedule, keeping your hair healthy and not overly greasy.

Plus, if you’re worried about your hair being too dirty, you can always use dry shampoo. This works well if your hair is too greasy, but it doesn’t have the same drying out impact that a wet wash provides.

When it comes to hair products, less is more

Applying lots of different products to your hair can be very tempting. You’ve got shampoo, conditioner, then things like hairspray, pomades, anti-heat treatments, and so on. Pretty soon, it all adds up to a concoction of chemicals on your scalp. While it seems like each of these things will benefit your hair, applying too many of them will be bad news. You’re just packing your hair full of sulfates and other potentially harmful things.

Instead, you should take the less is more approach to things. Realistically, you don’t need a massive stack of products to apply to your hair. Most people can get away with a natural shampoo and conditioner, and that’s it. Maybe you’ll have a natural hair mask as well, but there’s no need for everything else. Things like hairspray are typically only used because your hair is in bad shape, to begin with! When your hair becomes healthier, you soon realize that you don’t actually need loads of styling products. As for heat protection powders and sprays, there’s a whole other tip that relates to this!

Avoid heat as much as you can

You shouldn’t need to use heat protection products as you really shouldn’t apply heat to your hair. Hairdryers can be deadly for your gorgeous locks as the heat dries them out and makes them very brittle. Instead, it’s much healthier to let your hair dry naturally or in a towel. If you absolutely must use a hairdryer, use it on the lowest setting. Often, it’s the wind effect that will dry your hair, not the heat.

The same rule applies to things like hair straighteners or curling tongs. Whenever possible, don’t use them. You only need to burn yourself once with either of these products to know how outrageously hot they get. Do you think it’s healthy to subject your hair to this heat every day?! Save this for special occasions, like when you’re going out to a party!

The final heat-related hair hack is to protect your locks from the sun. You wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, but what do you do to your hair? Too much exposure to the hot UV rays can dry out your hair and leave it brittle. Wearing a hat can solve this, as will keeping your head out of the sun as much as possible.

Purchase a silk pillowcase

You won’t believe this, but the pillows you sleep on can impact your hair health. Madness, right? When you sleep, friction is created between your hair and the pillows, which can cause frizziness. Switching to a silk or satin pillowcase will prevent this, letting you wake up with stronger and healthier hair. Also, it’s smart to wash your pillows once a week, removing bacteria and germs from them. This helps to keep your hair clean, and it’s a tip most people seem to forge about!

On that note, we’ve come to the conclusion of this hair health guide. If you think back to the beginning, it was mentioned that you don’t need to apply all of these tips to your daily routine. It depends on the current state of your hair health, and the problems you face. Still, it’s worth adding as many as you can to prolong the health of your hair.
