How to Keep Your Dog Safe

December 16, 2021 by Alison Leave a Comment

Keeping your dog safe is extremely important. There are a lot of things to consider when you think about the safety of your pet.

As a pet owner, you need to be aware of them so that you can secure not only the safety of your pet but their health as well.

It can all be overwhelming especially if you are a new pet owner. However, there are a lot of things that can make the process of keeping your pet safe a lot easier. Here are some tips that will help you to improve your dog’s safety.

Supervise Your Dog in Public

Even when your dog is at a dog park you should make sure that you are keeping a close eye on them. Do not be tempted to do activities such as reading or talking with friends. This will distract you from paying attention to your dog.

Things can happen in a minute so keeping your dog safe means you need to supervise them constantly when you are out in public. Make sure that you keep your dog on a strong leash as well so that they cannot escape from you when you are out together.

 Watch Out for the Weather

Extremes of temperature can have a negative impact on your pet. If the temperature is extremely high or extremely low you need to be cognizant of how this can affect your dog.

On hot days make sure that your dog does not get overheated and provide them with enough hydration so that they do not get heatstroke.

If you notice that your dog is panting a lot or drooling it is best to take them inside to someplace that has air conditioning or let them stay in a cool spot to reduce body heat. On cooler days you also need to be mindful of how you take your dog outside.

When the weather is extremely cold smaller dogs with shorter hair might not be able to tolerate it as well as a dog that has a lot of hair. You can always get a dog a jacket if your dog is a breed that does not have enough fur to manage the cold weather.

Install Proper Fencing

Installing proper fencing is extremely important for keeping your dog safe. This is especially important if you live near a roadway.

However, if installing a physical fence is too much of a hassle you may want to consider installing an invisible dog fence.

You may be wondering, what are invisible dog fences? An invisible dog fence works by placing a collar around your dog’s neck and creating an invisible boundary wire underground.

The receiver collar that your pet wears will get a radio signal that is transmitted from the underground wire, this alerts your pet when they are too close to the boundaries.

The collar will not hurt your pet, it will just gently stimulate them if they try to move beyond the boundaries. This is a great way to keep your pet safe without having to install any fence around your home.

Identify Toxic Plants

One of the things that every dog owner should do is try to educate themselves about toxic plants. This is especially true if you live in an area with a high amount of vegetation.

There are some plants that are toxic to animals and if your pet comes into contact with them they can make them very sick or worse.

The plants that can make your dog sick may surprise you. For example, tulips, daffodils, lilies, and hydrangeas can be harmful to your dog.

If you have a garden around your home where you plant these flowers make sure that you keep your pet far away from them.

Keep Your Pet Safe

You now know some of the best ways to keep your dog safe in your home. Keeping your dog safe is something that you have to be strategic about.

You have to think about all the dangers that your pet can encounter and create a plan that will prevent these things from happening. With the tips given here, you should be able to keep your dog safe.

However, bear in mind that different dogs may be threatened by different things. Make sure that you take the time to seriously consider all the dangers that can affect your pet and be consistent about keeping them away from them.
