When you quit your job and go into business yourself, you imagine setting up something that will make you wealthy and be rewarding at the same time. Getting there, though, is always a challenge. Nothing ever quite works out how you imagine. You think you’re stepping on a linear path to the stars, but you encounter some valleys and trenches along the way.
The problem is often “breaking through” – that is, reaching a critical mass that will allow you to get the life that you want. Unfortunately, a lot of companies tend to top out before that happens. They start to saturate the market, without making the kinds of gains they’d hoped for.
In this post, we take a look at some of the ways that your business can break through this ceiling and get to the glorious world beyond. Check out our ideas below.
Focus Only On What Serves Your Genius
This idea might sound a little strange, but when you start applying it in your business life, you’ll discover that it makes a lot of sense. Don’t do anything that doesn’t really serve your genius. Instead, only take paths that naturally align with your abilities.
For instance, if a customer asks your business to go in a direction in which you don’t feel comfortable, forward them to a reputable partner. Likewise, don’t pursue things like marketing internally if you’re not naturally good at it. Instead, ask for outside help.
Get Out There
Staying online or trying to run your business remotely can get you part of the way to the promised land. But there’s nothing quite like having a real physical presence. That’s why Disney doesn’t confine itself to movie-making. It also builds physical stores in places like London, LA and New York.
Exhibiting at trade shows is another good idea. 10 x 20 trade show booths will provide sufficient space for you to contain everything that you need to contain and allow you to interact with customers directly. Physically interacting with people can have a tremendous impact on your brand. You’ll discover that people are keen to find out more about what you’re doing and who you are. They’ll also be more willing to trust you if they can see the individuals behind the operation.
Start Believing In Yourself
Interestingly, the biggest reason for businesses failing to break through is that the leadership doesn’t believe in themselves. They have an unconscious view that ultimate success isn’t for them: it’s for other people. If you think that the most money you can ever earn is $40,000, then $40K will probably be the most you take home in a single year.
Rooting this type of belief out and changing it can be challenging. One of the best techniques is to simply imagine your emotional state when you have everything that you want. When you do this, it changes your brain chemistry and can help you to convince your unconscious mind that ultimate success is realistic.
