6 Lessons That Farming Can Teach Children

April 4, 2022 by Alison Leave a Comment

You don’t have to have a farm in order to get children interested in farming. Farming can create many great lessons that little ones need to understand. This can include teaching them how to be responsible, understand animals, maintenance, and know when and when not to get in the mid. The great outdoors can teach a variety of skills to children, and farming is no different. Every child should experience farming in way, shape, or form as they’re going to learn life skills that they’ll never forget. Best part? You don’t have to have one. You can teach them basic things right in the comfort of home or even at a local farm!

So here are some top reasons why every child needs to experience farming.

Farming teaches children all about responsibility

Every adult understands the huge importance of a farm. There are no breaks for farmers. Every day they’re having to work. This includes feeding all the livestock, cleaning the bins, tending to all the plants such as watering, weeding, and of course harvesting. Farmers need to be accountable for themselves and this should be taught to children. They need to learn about accountability for themselves and need to understand responsibility. Taking your little ones to a farm will help them understand food production, and why the farmers need to work every day.

They’re learning where food comes from

Just like adults know where the food comes from, children don’t. They think it comes from grocery stores and that’s as far as it goes. Farming lets them know what happens before the produce reaches the grocery store. Children are simply amazed by some of the more simplistic things.  Kids will greatly benefit from getting the inside scoop on where their food comes from.

It teaches kids it’s not all about fun and games

Children love to play, there’s no doubt about that. But farming helps keep children engaged. It’s the perfect way to let children have fun but it also teaches children at the exact same time that work isn’t all about playing around. It’s the perfect balance for educating the child while still entertaining them.

Children will grow an appreciation for food

This is something that you can easily teach at home. Get some seed packets of fruits or veggies such as corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc., and try to grow them.  Let your child get involved in this too. This is going to teach them about the amount of work and the amount of time that it takes to grow and produce something that they can eat.

This is going to change the way they see food and this is going to get them to understand the amount of manpower and hours it takes to fill up those shelves at the grocery store. Kids who get to grow their own food and can understand the amount of work put into it will have a higher chance of not wasting their food and will more likely be less picky with what they eat.

Kids will learn about how to take care of animals

It’s usually farm animals that a child will learn first through development. Farm animals are on books, toys, flashcards, and even in cartoons. But taking them to a farm is going to let them learn about how to take care of these animals and the variety of animals there are. This includes the different breeds of cow and small horse breeds too. They’ll get to see how much work it takes to properly give these farm animals the amount of care that they need.

Shows that hard work can produce good results

Farmers can’t just simply give up. If they do, it means their animals won’t have food, they can make money, and they won’t be able to eat. Right? Farming is one of the hardest jobs in the world and it’s something that everyone can agree on. It’s a job that’s night and day, and it never ends. It’s physical, emotionally, and mentally demanding. But at the end of the day, it’s worth it for the farmers to do what they do. This can be one of the most valuable lessons for your children. Sometimes, work or situations can be tough, a lot of effort, but they’re meaningful and they should never give up.

Getting to take your children to a family-friendly farm can be a wonderful experience chocked full of educational experiences. This is going to get them to grow a love for mother nature and all the work that has to be put in, just for food to land on their table. So take some time out and have an outing at your local farm!
