Do you remember a few weeks ago when I told you about BRAVECTO® (Fluralaner), the tasty chew that provides protection for your dog from fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks? I told you about how for puppies 6 months and older BRAVECTO starts killing fleas within 2 hours and kills 100% of fleas within 12 hours (which by the way, is amazing!). But what I didn’t mention is what may actually be going on in your home if fleas are present on your pet. I’m a huge animal person and pretty keen on things like handling fleas and ticks, but some of this craziness, I didn’t even realize.
Seeing fleas on your itchy miserable dog is frustrating enough. Of course we hate for our pets to be uncomfortable, but let’s be honest, once they appear we’re dreading what comes next, the part of the problem that we may not be able to see. Adult fleas are relatively easy to kill, but by the time you see fleas on your dog, the adult ones, it is highly probably that those little buggers have not limited themselves to commandeering your pet and setting up residence. They’ve invited friends and family and it’s entirely possible that you also have an infestation of the immature stages in your home. Yuck!
Not sure where I’m sleeping but so long as she’s happy. #gsp #dogsofinstagram #stewardfamily2016 If she gets fleas, we all get fleas!
Unfortunately the saying “what you see is what you get” doesn’t really hold true in this scenario. Rather, the number of fleas on your dog and the number hiding under all the fur can be a big difference. What’s on your dog are just the adults, the rest of the life stages are off the dog and in the grass, your carpet, etc. Truthfully, you may really only see about 5% percent of the number of fleas that are hitching a ride on your pet — those guys are pretty good and going incognito which is bad news for us pet parents. It’s been shown that with 40 fleas you can expect approximately double that in pupae (cocoons), 280 larvae, and 10 times that many flea eggs hiding in your carpet, bedding, couch and even trickier places like the floor boards. Did I say gross?!
Jack Jack my helper tonight! He’s only about 6-7 months old, but such a good boy. I just love him. #stewardfamily2015 #redheeler #dogsofinstagram Hard to believe something this cute could ever cause problems right? Prevention is your best bet!

Once the issues presents itself, it’s a tough battle to fight. Even with good flea control you can expect to continue to see fleas for several months as all these life stages mature. Of course the best way to combat a flea infestation in your home is preventing an infestation on your dog; and the best way to prevent a flea infestation on your dog is to work with your vet and use flea control regularly, on time, and never miss is dose. We’re all busy and we want fast, easy, convenient options that work and that’s exactly what you get with BRAVECTO oral chews, the only chew that kills fleas for 12 weeks with just one dose. And with text, email and sticker reminders it’s easy to be on-time with your next dose.
Knowing what I know now just reinforces how important it is to get your pets into your veterinarian to make sure they’re protected because protecting them is also protecting you, your family, and your home. Keep your dog and your home flea free the easy way, with BRAVECTO. To stay in the know be sure to follow BRAVECTO on Facebook and/or Twitter!
