DIY Bug Repellent Balm

April 22, 2019 by Alison Leave a Comment

After what I’m certain was the absolute longest winter ever here in the Pacific Northwest; it seems Spring is just bulldozing a path straight to Summer. At least according to the amount of shedding my dogs and horses have been doing the last couple of weeks. Now I can’t wait for all the camping, fishing and BBQ’s that will be had this summer! Bring on the fun!

While I’m stoked to see the sun on a regular basis, the warmer weather has also caused some of our fave pesty bugs to awaken from their winter slumber. Now I’m all for inviting everyone to the party, but these guys are the exception to the rule. As much as I would like the flys and mosquitoes to stay away, I also don’t want to smell like bug spray all the time as it’s not the most flattering fragrance. If summer has you looking for an alternative to what’s available from your fave retailer, give this DIY concoction a try. It works great for us and you don’t smell like you’ve bathed in a vat of chemicals. Win – win if I do say so myself!

Supplies

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup safflower oil

¼ cup beeswax or soy wax

2-3 drops raspberry oil

5-10 drops of each of the following essentials oils: tea tree, clove, rosemary, lavender, and lemon essential oils

Small airtight containers

Instructions

Step 1. In a medium size microwave safe bowl, add coconut oil. Place in microwave for 30 seconds.

Step 2: Add beeswax or soy wax to bowl and return to microwave for another 30 seconds. Stir and continue to melt at 30 second intervals until mixture is liquid.

Steps 3-4: Add safflower and raspberry oil to bowl.

Step 5-9: Add essential oils to bowl and mix everything together thoroughly.

Step 10-11: Once thoroughly mixed, add mixture to small containers with an airtight lid. Use on bug bites, small rashes or any minor itches.
