They can be jerks, and they’re far from perfect. More of a goof troop if the truth be know, but one thing not up for debate is that our dogs really are part of the family; they’re loyal, they’re sweet, and they love us unconditionally. And in return, it’s up to us as their owners to make sure their needs are met- to provide them with everything they need to thrive and live happy and healthy lives alongside us. Here are some of the ways you can ensure that your dog’s life is fulfilling and the best it can possibly be.
Go to training classes
One of the very best ways to bond with your dog from day one, regardless of if it’s a pup, or an adult, and to ensure that you can live side by side without any issues is to make sure they’re well trained. Training allows your dog to understand what you want of them, and to respond in the correct way with each command. It ensures they’re not chewing up your home or toileting in the house, and instead know what they are and aren’t allowed to do. If you go to a training class which is held in a group then it’s an opportunity to meet and socialize with other dogs. If the training involves agility training then it’s a chance for your dog to exercise and burn off some steam which is perfect for those dogs that need a very active lifestyle to stay out of trouble.
Take them on holiday with you
Sometimes you might not have a choice but to put your dog in kennels while you’re away. However, if you’re able to avoid this then do try. While kennels will ensure your dog is safe and fed, they do generally tend to be quite a stressful environment. They’re confined to a reasonably small area in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by other dogs barking and it can be confusing and unpleasant for them. One issue many dog owners have is that they feel bad when they go on vacation, however you don’t always need to leave your beloved pooch behind! Lots of hotels allow you to bring pets, or you could look at a vacation rental property that’s pet friendly like Carolina Designs. You could go camping or boating or even on a road trip and bring your dog along! You don’t always need to fly abroad to enjoy a holiday, consider staying in your home country and doing something that involves your dog. From window shopping in cities to exploring national parks to trips to the beach, there’s plenty you can do that humans and hounds alike will enjoy.
Go on long walks
It’s no secret that dogs love walks, it’s always going to be one of their most favourite parts of the day. It’s a chance to smell and see new things, stretch their legs and spend time with you. Aim to walk your dog every day, the length and duration will depend on their age and breed. But if they’re able to enjoy long walks then make the most of it, it will benefit you as well as them and they’ll return home happy and content. If you work long hours, it’s worth hiring a dog walker to come in at midday and take them out to prevent them from getting too bored and restless.
Provide them with toys that stimulate their brain
Dogs can get bored, especially younger and more energetic breeds. Along with walks, toys can help to tire them out and give them something to do to prevent boredom. There are lots of toys and also games you can set up with your dog which provides fulfilment to them. Try hiding cereal boxes and other empty boxes around the garden with treats and have them seek them out. It’s cheap and easy to do.
Spend time with them
Last and certainly not least, spend time with your dog. Dogs bond closely with their owners and all they really want is to be close to you. Chances are you work and have to be away from them at times, so when you get the opportunity, spend time with them. Let them get on the sofa next to you or on your lap, sit with them while you’re watching tv. This is really the most important thing if you want your dog to lead a happy and fulfilled life- make sure they’re treated as part of the family.
