How Can You Improve Your Social Life?

January 20, 2020 by Alison Leave a Comment

It’s easy to forget, especially in a climate that promotes the individual and competition, but humans are social creatures. We need to spend time with other humans in order to be at our best; indeed, studies have shown that staying social can add years to your life, and let’s not overlook how much fun it can be to spend time with others. While there are times when it feels like we’re the king of the social pyramid, at others, it can feel like we have virtually no-one around us. This can happen for various reasons, and it’s nothing to freak out about! So how can you improve your social life? We take a look at a few tried and tested tips below.

Joining Clubs

It can be hard to make friends as an adult. It’s not like when you’re younger, when everyone’s in school and you just effortlessly spend time with others. Once you’re in adulthood, people have their own lives, and you can be left wondering where you’re going to meet people. One way to do it is to join clubs based on a hobby of yours. It could be art, sports, games, or anything. This is an excellent way to make friends since you’ll be meeting people with whom you already share an interest.

Suggesting New Activities

Of course, depending on where you live, you might find that there isn’t a club that you can join. But this doesn’t mean that you have to resign yourself to living a social-free existence. Instead, you can look at making things happen yourself. If you have an interest in, say, documentaries, but there are no documentary nights in your area, then set one up yourself. You’ll find that plenty of other people want to help once you’ve gotten the initial ball rolling along.

Handling Issues

We all want to have a social life, but sometimes it can feel like we’re just not suited to the types of socializing that’s on offer. For example, if you’re a quiet person, then you might recoil at the idea of going to a loud party, for example. Or you could have anxiety, hearing loss, or other issues that can make socializing more difficult. It’s important to remember, however, that there are always ways to overcome the issues that hold you back, no matter what they are. Anxiety can be treated by talking with a therapist, exercising, and practicing meditation; there are hearing aids for hearing issues, and so on. Once you’ve gotten rid of the thing that was holding you back, you might find that your social life soars.

Be a Good Friend

Finally, it’s important to look at your own role in your social life. Some people want to have friends, and blame others when it doesn’t happen. All relationships require work, so don’t expect to have a fantastic group of friends just by turning up. Instead of wishing for good people in your life, look at being a good person for others. You’ll find that everything flows a lot more smoothly.
