I shared with you earlier this week about my partnership with GoodNites®, but I didn’t go into detail about why that partnership came about. Bed wetting…not something moms like to talk about, but it happens. I’ll bet that it happens more than we actually think because like I said, we don’t like to discuss those embarrassing issues our kiddos may have. The reasons behind why it is happening may vary, but the fact is that if you’re experiencing a bed wetting problem, no matter how often it occurs, it’s an inconvenience and a hassle for you and your child in the middle of the night.
Who Wets The Bed at That Age?
Now when you think about bed wetting, you often think about smaller kids, maybe 3 – 4 years old who may be potty trained and awesome during the day but have still a bit of a problem overnight. Well, that wasn’t the case for us. My son basically potty trained himself overnight and maybe had a total of 2 or 3 accidents from the time he was 3 until about age 8. Sometime after his 8th birthday we started having some “occurrences”. He would wet the bed…maybe not completely soaked, but wet nonetheless…some nights were worse than others and it was happening several times a month. I know it could have been a lot worse, but the fact is it was happening, we had a problem, and we didn’t know what was triggering it. I had an embarrassed child, a frustrated mother, and a mountain of laundry. Not a good combination.
Why Didn’t I Think of This?!
Who like changing the sheets in the middle of the night? Not me! It’s a big enough chore just doing it during regular house cleaning, so middle of the night emergencies are less than ideal. So why was the only solution a mattress pad? That doesn’t exactly save the sheets so you still have a problem if there’s an accident. The good news is that now there is an awesome solution out there in the form of GoodNites® Bed Mats which are placed on top of the sheets with a peel and stick adhesive backing. The mats are the perfect size to give adequate coverage to twin size beds so they’re perfect for your older kiddos. They’re also super absorbent and discreet so the level of embarrassment is greatly reduced. It doesn’t get any easier than that. And we all know I’m a huge supporter of anything that adds an element of convenience to the lives of busy families. GoodNites® Bed Mats … Genius right? (Well I certainly think so!)
How Did We End Up?
You’re probably wondering how our situation resolved itself, or if it did right? Well, the good news is that by the time my son turned 10, we had figured out our trigger, and taken steps to correct the situation and have been very happily accident free for almost 2 years (he will be 12 this summer). What we learned is that my boy child is a ridiculously heavy sleeper. As he got older and was more active with P.E. in school, participating in sports in the evenings, and possibly staying up watching Cartoon Network later than he should, he slept so soundly that he did not wake up when he needed to use the restroom…he was that tired. The nights that he did not empty his bladder immediately before bed, are the nights we were most likely to have an accident. In addition, he had a habit of taking a bottle of water to bed with him which just amplified the problem. Once we figured this out, the course of action to fix the issue was pretty obvious; earlier bed time especially on school nights, no water after going to bed, and most important, using the bathroom before laying down for the night. While it’s been a while since we had an incident, I will admit that there’s always a pack of GoodNites® Bed Mats on hand just in case.
GoodNights® Better Nights
As if the awesome bed mats aren’t enough, GoodNites® is offering you a chance to win a three-month supply of Bed Mats and a series of gift cards totaling $5,000 to reward their child with a complete bedroom set as part of the GoodNights® Better Nights Sweepstakes.
