I never wanted cats. I always saw myself as a dog person (which I am, don’t get me wrong). But mostly, I’m an animal lover and as a result, I have cats. A couple of them are ones that we’ve adopted from stray litters (we live in the country) and they’ve ended up with a pretty easy life, coming and going as they please. But one of them, Cleo, she’s different. She’s a Maine Coone, about 20 pounds on her skinny days (you get that right girls!), and she’s a rescue. Now I don’t love the others any less – I’d be devastated if anything happened to them during their midnight adventures, but Cleo, she just requires a little more special care.
You see, I was at the local Humane Society one day, trying do decide which animal was in the most need for salvation, you know, the old, the sick, the handicapped.I tend to go home with the ones that I don’t think have as much of a chance at getting adopted because they need love too for as long as they’re around and they’re the best at loving back, and I came across a huge cat, backed up in the corner of the cage in the cat room. By the time we were ready to leave we learned that she was about 5 years old and an owner surrender (they were moving blah, blah, blah). She had been an indoor cat so didn’t really know anyone else. I spent a fair amount time trying to get her to warm up and she finally low crawled her way to the front and let me scratch her head a little bit.
Long story short we took this little, big lady home and waited about two months to ever see her. She was terrified and hid under our bed night and day. Once we left for work and the house was quiet she would come out and eat the cat food we left for her and then right back in to hiding. Finally after weeks of leaving her alone and letting her have her space to get used to this new life, she started coming out when it just just my husband or I around. She craved the attention but still wasn’t sure about the kids or other animals. Fast forward about a year and now Cleo, all 20+ pounds of her, can usually be found laying in one of the kitchen chairs or laying her back sunning her belly in the middle of the living room floor.
She loves her people , in fact my son can usually be found toting her around, and she’s kind of okay with the other animals, but this is why I say Cleo needs a little extra TLC…she’s a special lady and requires a tender touch and that’s why I feed her things like Purina Pro Plan Cat. The bond you share with your cat means everything and that makes choosing the right food for your cat an important decision. While some companies are quick to jump on fads, I like knowing that every ingredient in Purina Pro Plan Cat serves a purpose and is carefully selected to play a role in the advanced nutrition that helps Cleo thrive. According to Cleo, it tastes pretty darn good too!
