First off, let’s be clear, I don’t mean farm like rows of crops and harvesters and that kind of farming. I mean we a decent sized parcel of land, we raise and train horses, and have way to many rescue animals that we love and who make the chaos complete…you know, that kind of farm.
Now on that farm we have some horses…okay lots of horses; and dogs, and our amazing team of farm cats that keep the barn rodent free and demand way more attention than what should be expected based on the amount of work they put out every day. It’s truly a family affair since we live next door to my husbands parents, who are the unofficial ringmasters of this circus.
Monitoring all of the barn activities is a super tough job, but somebody’s got to do it…or everybody all at the same time. These cats I tell you, have a pretty luxury life as far as non-house cats go. You can tell they are pretty comfortable – almost like box seats at the game.
There’s one of these cats though; we call him Little Gray, although he’s not that little anymore at a year old. A feral barn cat rescued from a mama that rejected him, this little man was bottle fed from the day he was born by our family. Now he’s the king of the castle and the stable.
“Gray” takes his duties very seriously overseeing the work and making sure everything is going as it should be. Regular trips to the local Tractor Supply Co. make that task a whole lot easier.
