Simple Ways To Ensure Your Home Is Safer For Kids

January 12, 2020 by Alison Leave a Comment

We often think or at least hope that our home is safe for kids. Unfortunately, though, this isn’t always the case. The reality is that a home can be filled with dangers that you might not be aware of and may not have considered. It’s worth tackling these issues to ensure that you are doing everything you can to avoid accidents and injuries.

Kitchen Nightmares

If you’re looking for the place where an accident is most likely to happen in your home, the kitchen should always be your first point of call. The kitchen is filled with hazards that you need to be aware of and understand. Arguably, the greatest hazard in the kitchen is going to be burns. There are a few ways to combat this issue. For instance, you can consider investing in a heat induction hob. Heat induction hobs are ideal because they only heat up the surface area of the pan or dish that is in use. This also makes them more eco-friendly and saves you on your energy bill. However, the crucial benefit is that if a child touches the part that is not covered, they won’t get burned. So, it’s far safer.

The other heat danger comes from the kitchen faucet. It is possible for a child to burn their hand under the kitchen faucet because they can run quite hot. If you are worried about this issue, then you should consider investing in some new tech now on the market. Fresh tech will ensure that the faucet changes color depending on the heat of the tap. So, as well as making it safer, it’s a highly stylized option for your kitchen as well that you certainly don’t want to miss out on. By doing this, you can avoid needing to reach for the xylocaine when a child suffers a mild burn in the kitchen.

Flooring

Hardwood flooring may seem like a stylish choice for your home. However, it does present a few issues for homes with families. First, as the name suggests, this flooring is hard. That means that if there are any slips, trips or falls, then it could lead to quite a nasty injury. This is a problem as kids are well known for running around inside, even when they are told it’s not safe.

One of the ways that you can handle this issue would be by putting down some rugs and mats. This has two benefits. It ensures that your home is safer and it also adds texture to the room. As such, it can give the area more character which is ideal. Alternatively, if you are completing a renovation on your property, you might want to consider laminate flooring instead. Laminate flooring has the aesthetic of wood floor but provides more give.

This means that you won’t have to worry about a potentially nasty injury if someone does fall over. You might be wondering why we’re not recommending carpet. Well, carpet causes other issues if you have kids. It’s difficult to keep it well maintained. You can’t simply wipe away stains, unfortunately.

Other Issues

You do need to think about the danger of a child falling downstairs, particularly when they are younger. One of the easiest ways to combat this issue is to set up a stair gate. As the name suggests, this is simply a gate on the stairs which is ideal. Many people use these if they have a sleepwalker in their family. It will prevent them from falling downstairs in the middle of the night.

Alternatively, you might also want to consider the problem with mold. We often think of mold as just an unsightly issue in the home caused by damp. However, this isn’t quite true. The reality is that mold can be a serious issue because the pores it releases may irritate the lungs. It has even been linked to problems with breathing conditions. There are various ways to deal with a build-up of mold around an area of your home. One of the best options is to simply get a dehumidifier. With a dehumidifier, you can ensure that the root cause of the mold is dealt with effectively. Remember, mold may look harmless. But if you have what seems to be dirt around your windows, it could be causing you a lot of issues.

We hope this helps you understand some of the best ways that you can guarantee your home is safe for kids. These hazards may seem minor but they can cause major issues if you are not prepared for them.
