Capturing Great Images and Videos of Your Little Ones

November 7, 2020 by Alison Leave a Comment

When you have a kid, they’re going to become the center of your world. Your life is going to revolve around them and chances are you’re going to want plenty of pictures and videos for memories of every stage of their life. These are for your own benefit, you can share them with other family members and your kids can look back on them fondly when they’re all grown up. But what are some of the best ways of getting the best quality pictures of your little ones possible? Here are just a few suggestions that will help you along the way!

Smart Phone

Nowadays, people are taking more pictures than ever. We have access to cameras easier than any generation before us. Technology has expanded so rapidly and on such a widespread scale that now the majority of people have a camera in their smartphone. Rather than having to carry a bulky camera around, people can capture images on the same device they fit in their pocket to make calls, message, search the internet, shop, play games and more. This is perfect when you have kids. After all, you’re probably already carting around all sorts of items, from nappy changing bags to spare clothes, baby food, snacks and more. You may not be able to carry a camera everywhere you go. Having a smartphone to whip out as and when you want to capture a moment is perfect! Now, nowadays, most smartphones have pretty good camera quality. But keeping up with the latest releases tends to get you the best quality camera possible. This will capture better images of your little ones. Look for options that have portrait modes and good night modes. This will help you to get great pictures at any time of day and night.

Digital Cameras

If you want even better quality images where you have more manual control over the pictures you take, you may want to invest in a digital camera like a DSLR. These aren’t quite so designed for every day use, as they do tend to require a camera bag and can be slightly heavy and bulky. But for special occasions, they’re great. You can pull these out at events where you may not have to carry so much, such as at home on birthdays or seasonal celebrations like Christmas. There are a lot of digital cameras on the market, all suited for different levels of professionalism and in different price ranges. Set yourself a budget and determine what options are available to you. Then, it’s worth reading other users’ reviews and recommendations. You can generally get some pretty in-depth information that will help you to make the right decision.

Film Cameras

If you want more classic looking images, then you may want to consider using a film camera. Sure, these are generally more expensive to use. After all, you have to pay for prints and development. But the beauty of film cameras is that you tend to get more candid and authentic images, as you can’t see what images you’ve captured until they’ve been developed, which means no retaking to get a “better” shot. Like digital cameras, there are a host of film cameras available on the market. There are options from different brands and, again, options in different price brackets that are designed for users from beginners to professionals. It’s a good idea to do a fair amount of research before investing. Make sure you get all the right add ons you may need too – not all film and SLR cameras come with flash and you may need to buy accessories such as flash blocks to get full use from your film camera.

Instant Film Cameras

Instant film cameras dropped out of fashion for a while, but demand is back and there are many options on the market. These are cameras where you get an instant print out of the image you’ve taken. These images tend to be lower quality, but they are snapshot moments that give a nostalgic feel. You can display them in a number of ways, from clips on a piece of string across your little one, in special tiny photo albums and more. Again, this is a more expensive way to take images, as instant film can cost a little more. So, it’s not for everyday use. But for special occasions and the occasional shot they’re perfect!

Video Footage

Still images aren’t where footage can end. You can easily take videos of your little ones nowadays too! Now, smartphones, again, offer this. But if you’re looking for an alternative way to shoot videos, the options below could be ideal for you.

Drones

Drones are great fun. They can have cameras added and can then take long distance, aerial or sweeping shots of your little ones from afar. This is a great way to get some really unique footage. Imagine – taking your drone on a family holiday and managing to get some great videos of your little ones playing on the beach and in the sea. There are plenty of drones on the market, so take a look at the DJI Mavic Mini 2 to get started!

GoPros

If you and your kids do a lot of activities that involve getting muddy, being in the water and more, a GoPro could be great for you. These hardy little video cameras can stand a lot of wear and tear, are waterproof and can be cleaned up easily.

Camcorders

Then there’s the traditional camcorder. People use these less nowadays, but they can have a good old nostalgic feel to the footage too. Why not look around for one at a car boot sale or on auction sites like eBay!

These are just a few options when it comes to capturing great footage of your kids. There are plenty more out there, but these are some of the most accessible and affordable!
