Friday the 13th – Superstition or Fact?

September 13, 2013 by Alison 9 Comments

Okay – I was going to write about all the bad luck and superstition associated with Freaky Friday the 13th. Then I opened my e-mail this morning and I had one stating that I had won a giveaway that I entered over on another website  and a second stating I had been chosen for my first Influenster box and that it should be arriving soon. (If you’re interested in signing up for Influenster, let me know and I’ll send you an invite.) Now that’s certainly not bad luck right? In fact the day seemed to be starting off pretty dang well. I just may have to change my outlook on that whole Friday the 13th thing! Now there’s time for things to change – I mean the day is still very young and it’s anyone’s game at this point. I’ll hope for the best though – they say things happen in 3’s so since I’ve gotten good news twice today, one more good piece of news would complete the trifecta so that’s what we’re hoping for!

In the meantime, just for fun here are a few random superstitions that I’ve heard over the years:

  • Find a penny, pick it up – this supposedly leads to good luck

Don’t walk under a ladder – this one, bad luck

Watch out for black cats – don’t let them cross your path as this is certain to lead to disaster

A rabbits foot – somehow this piece of dead animal is destined to bring you luck if you possess it

Break a mirror and you’re cursed with seven years of bad luck
Three sixes in a row (Do I dare type them out and invite trouble? I think not!)
Making a wish on a wishbone more good luck based on the graciousness of dead things…weird!
Opening an Umbrella in the house is bad luck

Horseshoes hung about the doorway in a home will bring good luck
If the palm of your right hand itches you will soon be getting money.
Birthday Candles – if you blow them all out with one breath you will get your wish.
Of course Freaky Friday or Friday the 13th – While it is the favorite day of the week for many, historically Friday is supposedly an unlucky day and 13th the unluckiest number of all. When you combine the two of course you have yourself certain doom!

What do you think? Superstition or fact? Do you believe in any of these? Do you think Friday the 13th is bad luck – is there anything you do differently on Friday the 13th? What are other superstitions you’ve heard in the past? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

I don’t necessarily believe in most of these either Gary but I think it’s interesting to see where some of these came from and if anyone finds any truth in them. Thanks for reading! 🙂

I tend to go by the 3 fold rule more than superstition 🙂

It’s almost over and I have survived the 13th unscathed! I love to hear all the superstitions people believe in.

We used to use game tokens at the skating rink to buy lucky bunny feet in middle school. Haha gross!

I am superstitious to a point, but some of them I don’t think do anything.
